Our History

The Sunflower Coffee Shop dates back to 1966, when a group of road travelers could not find a
decent
coffee on their way through Central Alabama.
Early in the morning, after driving the whole night, they needed a strong yet tasty beverage to
stay
awake while enjoying the rest of their journey.
This was five years before Starbucks, so they ended up getting espresso from Dunkin’ Donuts,
which they
generously covered with whip cream.
It appeared so delicious that they served a similar coffee at the next five of their parties,
always
praised by all guests.
They experimented with a few different coffee brands and syrups, and finally, bought a small
partially
abandoned cottage to open a coffee shop,
calling it Sunflower because of sunflower fields they drove through when drinking their first
Alabama cup of
espresso.
Over the next decades, the company opened Sunflower Coffee shops in Mississippi, Louisiana, and
Texas.
